Dictionary Project
It is our goal to encourage children to use the dictionaries so that they will be able to use the English language effectively. The dictionaries are a gift for the children to keep and students can use the dictionaries throughout their school careers. Also, we realize that a dictionary in the home serves as a resource for the whole family. It improves everyone's vocabulary and it encourages children to learn more words. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn. It is the intention of Meriden Rotary to assist all third grade students in completing the school year as good writers, active readers and creative thinkers by providing students with their own personal dictionary. The Meriden Rotary Dictionary Project is one way for us to give to our community in a very meaningful way that has an immediate, positive and long lasting impact. The Rotary Members find that is gives them great pleasure to get into the schools and share their time with a captive and impressionable audience!

In 2007 the Meriden Rotary Club began giving dictionaries to each third grade student in Meriden, public and parochial schools, in an effort to show students that we care about them and that we take a great interest in their learning and in education, in general. The Rotary Club members actually visit each third grade classroom in Meriden, each year, and spend time with the students, engaging them in conversation about the individual members’ careers, connecting the Four -Way Test to the students lessons of respecting self, others and property as well as having them look up some words in their new dictionaries and using those words in sentences.
